See Where Jazz Was Born

Get a sense of the world created by legendary local musicians like Jelly Roll Morton, Buddy Bolden, and Gospel Singer Mahalia Jackson. Take photos in front of the famous statue of Jazz icon Louis Armstrong as you stroll through the park. In historic Treme, you will explore the culture and heritage of the oldest African American neighborhood in the United States. Witness first hand the post-Hurricane Katrina renaissance and revitalization of the community where Jazz was born. Free People of Color in New Orleans

Did you know that in 1840, more than 19,000 Free People of Color lived in the City of New Orleans? The Free People of Color, known as the Gens de Couleur Libres, were African, Creoles of Color, and persons of mixed race African, European, and Native American ancestry. The Free People of Color were artisans, business owners, craftsmen, educators, inventors, musicians, and plantation owners whose legacy lives on in the music, cuisine, and culture of New Orleans.
